AlterEgo

A wearable silent-speech interface for talking to AI and devices without making a sound.

Based
Boston, Massachusetts

AlterEgo makes a non-invasive wearable that fits around the ear and jawline and reads the faint neuromuscular signals produced when a person silently intends to speak, turning them into text and commands. Its Silent Sense technology, developed at the MIT Media Lab, uses surface electromyography to let users query AI, send messages, and control devices hands-free and screen-free, and aims to restore communication for people who have lost audible speech from conditions such as ALS. The project originated at MIT in 2018 and spun off as a for-profit company in early 2025.
