Who is Ian Burkhart?

Ian Burkhart was the first person to regain movement in a paralysed limb using an implanted brain-computer interface, as the sole participant in the Battelle NeuroLife neural bypass trial at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He lived with a Utah array in his motor cortex from April 2014 until August 2021. He founded the BCI Pioneers Coalition, which brings implanted research participants together to set ethics and best practice for the field, and the Ian Burkhart Foundation, which funds equipment and research for people with spinal cord injuries.
